We will respond to some frequently asked questions here

It is our first-time handling exports to Japan. As beginners, will we be able to handle it?

Yes, no problem. At CosmeticExportSupport.jp, we have several services to support customers dealing with cosmetic exports for the first time. If you are interested in trying export cosmetics to Japan, feeling lost without the knowledge of the basics, or you have any other concerns, please feel free to contact us.

What is the necessary information for cosmetics registration in Japan?

The necessary information is factory name, address and licenses, exporter’s name and address, product full ingredient list (exact percentages are needed only for ingredients with limitations such as preservatives) and product’s laboratory tests when available(COA/MSDS/Etc.). In addition, we require 2 sealed samples with correct packaging (exact style as the product for export).

How long does it take to complete registration for cosmetics in Japan?

For exports, full process of registration usually takes about 2 to 3 months. However, in some cases a unique product might need extra laboratory tests and/or new ingredient Japanese name registration that might make the process longer. The regular process includes checking ingredients, laboratory tests, registering the factory, registering the exporter, registering the product and creating Japanese labels according to Japan health minister law.

What are your costs for the various processes?

Costs for cosmetic exports can be divided roughly into the initial costs, such as analyzing & registering ingredients, and then, the import custom & distribution costs. If you are exporting the same product, the initial cost is only necessary on the first export. Export custom & distribution costs change considerably according to number, size, weight etc.

Can you help us with knowledge on what sells in Japan?

We can help you with advice on packaging, texture, instructions and scents that are popular in Japan as well as what does not work well. We always have the latest information on current trends and the latest successes of products and brands. We can also help to arrange a sampling trial of Japanese women/men to use and comment about your products.
With that said we cannot guaranty which product will sell well and which will not since it is also very much related to the market condition, your PR activities and sales promotion actions.

What are the rules in Japan regarding expiry dates and batch No.?

In Japan, any product with 3 years to expiration or less is required to have an expiration date.
If the product has more than 3 years expiration time, then the expiration date is not necessary.
In any case the product must have a clearly visible batch No. or production Lot No. on it.
